LightningWX 1.5.14: Hurricane Models, Tornado Chance and Past Storms
LightningWX version 1.5.14 is the current release, announced on the LightningWX website on October 5, 2026. It is a large update to the Windows weather radar workstation, and most of it is aimed at severe weather and tropical storms.
What is new in 1.5.14
- Every hurricane model plus LightningWX Consensus. The Tropics window now shows every model the National Hurricane Center receives, along with our own experimental LightningWX Consensus forecast of storm track and strength.
- Tornado Chance (experimental). A 30-minute tornado chance for each storm, built from its rotation, how long the rotation has lasted, tornado and debris signatures, hail size and the surrounding air. It is guidance, not a warning.
- Storm Path & Timing. Each storm gets a track ribbon with its 15, 30, 45 and 60 minute positions, and towns in its path get an arrival window.
- Storm Mergers and the Damaging Wind Detector (both experimental).
- Birds On Radar. A view that shows only the birds and bugs the radar sees.
- Past Storms. A radar archive browser for replaying storms from NOAA’s public Level II archive. It comes with the LightningWX license.
- More weather models, easier map moving and a faster, lighter radar. The loop fills in about twice as fast, and radar data takes half the memory.
The 3D Storm Scene also gained several improvements in this release. The full list is on the LightningWX features page.
